During the last two months there have been many wildfires in the island. Considering the season (late autumn), many speculate that at least some of them are related to the questionable practice of vegetation regulation by stock breeders.
In order to address this serious issue, which threatens the well-being of the protected areas of Andros, a special meeting was organized in Korthi by WWF and Korthi Environmental Education Center. LIFE project members presented some of the efforts made to maintain the island’s fragile environment.
More has to be done towards a sustainable use of the land, since desertification processes tend to result in an endless loop, from which the island has to escape.
